Where Literature and Art Found Common Ground
At a time when illustrations were often treated as additions, one New York publisher gave them a meaningful role. Active during the 1930s, Three Sirens Press brought writing and visual art into the same conversation. Its catalogue included Oscar Wilde’s Salome, Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, Lysistrata, the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, and Samuel Pepys’ Diary.
Each edition reflected an idea: the appearance of a book could deepen the power of its words. Nearly a century later, that principle gives the name renewed purpose. Therefore, we continue to see literature and design as inseparable, creating books meant to be read, revisited, valued, and kept.
